Raised in Columbus, Ohio and now residing in Lancaster County, PA, Marianne Calenda began her art journey with a scholarship from the Columbus College of Art and Design’s Saturday studio for high school students. She earned a BA in Art from Thiel College in Greenville, PA with an emphasis in printmaking. Calenda went on to earn an MA which led to a 20-year career in higher education administration. After retiring in 2018, she reinvested in a daily art practice and connected with regional arts organizations. She is an active member of Marietta Art Alive! and an organizer of the successful River Towns Plein Air. Calenda's work is shown at the MH Art Gallery & Studio in Marietta, PA.
Calenda's paintings and mixed media work on paper have been recognized by the Maryland Federation for Art and the Lancaster Museum of Art. She evokes an emotional response to the landscape by utilizing a limited palette while exploring the liminal space between drawing and painting; developing patina and innovative mark making are key aspects of creating atmosphere. Calenda works primarily in aqueous media, mainly acrylic on paper combined with charcoal and soft pastel in the studio and en plein air.
