Known commonly for her work with acrylic paints, Kara O’Brien has most recently switched gears to experimenting again with oil paints. In order to get back into creative exploration, Kara has been working with oils to play with abstract skyscapes, landscapes and the open water. She focuses on creating a light and airy feel with a pop of energy between plains. Kara has spent the last seven years in Philadelphia but is making her way back to her hometown of West Chester, PA. She attended Villa Maria Academy and then later received her degree in Art Education from Shippensburg University. Currently she is teaching high school studio art at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur where she gets to share her love of art with her students. Creating new and exciting work has been an evolving practice for Kara. Finding inspiration in artists Ashley Longshore, Bisa Butler, Mary Cassatt, and Kehinde Wiley helped her to look at creating in different ways. Kara’s push to try different techniques and styles comes from working with students. Each year as a new set of students come through her classroom, she is challenged to keep up with the interests of those in front of her. This pushes Kara to research and challenge her own creative practice each day.You can see Kara’s most recent commissions on her instagram @karaluziart. She is now at a point where she will be taking a break from commissions to explore her next body of work, stay tuned!
